A Personal Story

Robert David Davila, a beloved husband, father, and child of God, is the inspiration behind The David Foundation. David was born in Guatemala and adopted at a young age into a large and loving family. There in Guatemala, he met his true love, Lisette, on a school bus. They married and started their lives together in America. Their two sons, Anthony and Thomas, joined their adventures and grew up visiting family in Guatemala, traveling to new places, going to theme parks, seeing jets and airplanes, and looking through a telescope at a sky full of stars.

David was a hard worker, a deeply loving husband, an affectionate father, and a source of strength for his many friends and family. Underneath it all and unknown to many, Robert battled against severe depression. Robert was a warm, loving, and jovial soul waging against an unspoken and unseen pain.

On March 17, 2012, Robert tragically and unexpectedly ended his life. His oldest son, Anthony, was attending college. His youngest, Thomas, had just turned 18 years old and was set to graduate high school that spring. His devastating loss was felt by his family, coworkers, and community in Sharpsburg, Georgia. Out of his loss, his wife and children grappled with grief, guilt, anger, heartbreak, confusion, bankruptcy, and even homelessness.

By God’s grace and with the help of their community, David’s family was able to get back on their feet after loss, to begin to heal, and to look outward, considering how to help others as David modeled.

The David Foundation was started by David’s son, Thomas, in 2026 to walk with families affected by suicide, showing up with love, prayer, and real support in the face of significant loss. The work of The David Foundation is is in honor of David and his enduring impact on the lives of those he loved.
